Proscalpin (Finasteride) is a medicine for the treatment of hair loss and baldness of men and only for men. Propecia is produced in the form of the tablets that must be taken, one tablet once a day.

Since its marketing as a treatment for hair loss, the side effects of finasteride have been regularly subject to debate and controversy, especially as regards its impact on sexuality. This drug belongs to a class of drugs called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. At first, its purpose was very different from the one with which it is currently applied. Indeed, finasteride was initially used for the treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The fact that those patients who consumed it also experienced a slowing of the hair loss was the track that followed the experts to develop the recommendation of this drug in the approach of alopecia. It was later demonstrated that in the case of hair, blocking the enzyme 5-alpha reductase prevents the transformation of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, inhibiting atrophy of the hair follicle and thus contributing to the reduction of hair loss.

Proscalpin (Finasteride) dosage

This drug is given orally at a recommended dose of 1 milligram daily. It can be used by men suffering from androgenic alopecia. The effects begin to be noticed between the 3 and 6 months of having begun the treatment.

Contraindications of finasteride include children and patients with hepatic impairment. It is also recommended that in men, a study of prostate antigen levels should be performed prior to use, as it may reduce their levels.

Proscalpin (Finasteride) side effects

As for the side effects of finasteride, the most controversial have been those that have on the libido, decreasing it, and also on erectile function. However, one of the latest research in this regard has shown that this risk is minimal. Its authors noted that only 1.8 percent of men who consumed this drug experienced a decrease in their libido and 1.3 percent had erectile dysfunction. The drug has also been associated with decreased sperm count, but not the number of sperm. All these finasteride side effects related to sexual dysfunction are reversible once its use is discontinued: some feel increase their libido by leaving finasteride, others appreciate improvement in their problem of erectile dysfunction…

What should be clear is that once the treatment is stopped the positive effects on hair growth will cease. It is therefore important that this medication is always consumed under the supervision of the doctor and that the specialist should be consulted in case of suffering from some of these symptoms or others that have been associated with the drug: rash, hives, swelling of the lips and face, difficulty To breathe or swallow …
